Sven B. Schreiber Oh, what a splendid album... once again, Bandcamp's paradigma of following other customers to see what they are buying proved to be rewarding - much more than searching for genres and tags. Never heard of Jelly Cleaver before, but she's on my list of top folk rock favorites now for sure. A great voice, an experienced songwriting talent, and an overwhelming way of picking the electric guitar... this album is on continous play today on my tablet. The digital album comprises a 40-minute track named "Whole Album CD Edit", which is a gapless concatenation of the 12 songs for seamless listening, yielding a stunning monumental folk rock epic - and this is the way this album really should be listened to. Favorite track: I Was Thinking.

about

‘Cure for an Existential Crisis’ is a collection of four folk suites and one song exploring the crisis of living and the fear of death. It represents the debut solo album of singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jelly Cleaver. Recorded with a small orchestra at the famous Roundhouse in Camden, it is an album of symphonic folk reminiscent of Bridget St John and Joni Mitchell, or more modern troubadours like Father John Misty. Taking a trip through the human consciousness, she journeys through the full depths of human emotion with just her voice and guitar.

Track Name: Secret Pt. 2
We are told that we cannot aspire to greatness, but only to be rich
Do you think all rich people are happy?
Then I wonder, I wonder what you think happiness is.
We are bounded by the boundaries of our understanding
If you understood the world you would not stand for half of these things.
And I know I shouldn’t say half of these things
I know what you’re thinking: it’s uncomfortable to listen,
But if you listen to the truth it can often sound misleading
And you’ve got to, you’ve got to look at who’s been guiding you.

It’s your deepest secret, it’s your deepest secret, it’s your deepest secret,
You already know it, but you’d never believe it.

When everything you know consists of contradictions
You’ve got to think that something must be wrong
When everything you do is not really for you
You’ve got to think you shouldn’t play along
When everyone you know is getting depressed
And every choice you make is making you stressed
You’ve got to think seriously that maybe, maybe you just don’t belong.

It’s your deepest secret, it’s your deepest secret, it’s your deepest secret,
You already know it, but you’d never believe it.

Well my mind’s my own, and these are just the thoughts of an idle mind
But when I think of home, I know just what I expect to find
And after where I’ve been and all that I’ve seen I know why I am that way inclined
And I know just where you’re coming from, for that is where I left behind
So I’m speaking to you if you will excuse me
And I’ll speak for you if you won’t abuse me
Don’t get me wrong, don’t get me wrong.

It’s our deepest secret x6
You already know it, but you’d never believe
Track Name: I Was Thinking
I was feeling, I was feeling nothing
I was yearning, I was yearning for meaning
Why do we do the things that we do, why do we say the things that we say?
Why must the poet die in the street, why must the music fade away?
Why do we laugh, why do we cry, why do we give, why do we try?
Why do we live and why do we die, how should we pass the time?

Take a picture let me look upon the face of emotion
Sing your song swan to love, let me hear your devotion
Take me by the tongue, put my body in motion
I don’t know who we are

But I’ve been thinking, I’ve been thinking deeply
I’ve been thinking thoughts that scare me deeply

What’s in a name, the parts that we play
What is this game that we can’t win
What is this life? Numbers or words?
Neither explains a single thing, like
What is joy, where does she live
Who does she spend her time with
And is beauty as elusive as her twin?

Take a picture let me look upon the face of emotion
Sing your song swan to love, let me hear your devotion
Take me by the tongue, put my body in motion
I don’t know who we are
Or what we are doing, or where we are going
Or what we are learning, or who is it serving
Or what is its meaning, but I want a connection
Oh, some comprehension, a little affection from you

I don’t need, I don’t need your answer
I just want, I just want to pass the time
Laughing with you, dancing with you, it might not be
Written in walls, or in the stars, but we’ll say these are the times of our lives
So what do we care, that which has passed
Now that the now is here at last?
Why should we ask what we can’t even explain?

Take a picture let me look upon the face of emotion
Sing your song swan to love, let me hear your devotion
Take me by the tongue, put my body in motion
I don’t know who we are
No I don’t know who we are
Track Name: Ode To Morrissey
I could idealise from my run-down flat on the east-side
Where I could fantasise about my on-coming, high-flying life
But maybe I should do something better, philosophy won’t get me anywhere
I should probably get a shitting city job
But, oh, to be a dreamer, a scanner and a schemer
Building make-shift bands, and castles made of sand
Oh God, I wish I had a cause of love or freedom
But we don’t really do either of them anymore
I could rhapsodise about being so young a free
But all the while feel the soil falling over me
Oh Morrissey, I can feel the soil falling over my head
But you know I never had a mother, never listened to a word my father said
No I never had a mother, never listened to a word my father said
Track Name: Caged Bird
I know why the caged bird sings
For he dreams of better things
But money doesn’t come to him as it goes to other men,
Bitter fate has clipped his wings

He lost his little chicks one, two, three
Fell from hunger on his knee
He had whistled out to Lady Charity
But money was tight in the golden tree

If he was a magpie he could have his pick
He flew north for springtime, drawn by shiny things
To a land of plenty, milk and honey thick
King of all the forest, he owns every bit

Birds of a feather, these poor lost souls,
Flying around like they’re in a fish bowl
Give them all a penny and they could share the world
Open up their cage, let their wings unfurl
Track Name: Songs of Old
And we will live in peace, war and hunger end
If we live in the love of eternity
Can you hear the songs of old through the centuries?
That man will live unbound, as birds, flying free
Track Name: The Holy Father
Oh, the Holy Father has taken my lover from me
Cast his last breath to the wind and the hopes of what never could be
Over the seas and far away I shall see him no more
Oh the Holy Father has taken my lover from me

Pain cannot touch you now, I shall bury your troubles with thee
Rest in your stony bed, I shall tend to the flowers and weeds
Over the seas and far away, I shall see you no more
Oh the Holy Father has taken my lover from me
Oh
Track Name: Southwark Cathedral
He, he waits for me
He waits for me
I would circle Southwark Cathedral three times
Just to see him rise
So tell me, have you seen my lover?

He calls to me, he calls to me
I would circle Southwark Cathedral thrice
To bring him into life
So tell me, have you seen my lover?

He waits for me, he waits for me
The doe at the bow of a warship rides, he walks beside
So tell me, have you seen my lover x4
Track Name: The Outsider
So I stood on the outside looking in
As a former inside who had never belonged
I saw that both sides were wrong
But who was right? I just couldn’t tell you
I was living another man’s lie
But somehow the truth had passed me by
But maybe truth was just an alibi
That is nowhere to be found

Yet I long for a friend to share their love with me
Only love will set you free, only love will set you free

I fell in love with his troubadour’s song
And I put all my hopes on the words of a dead man
But the living, they have no plan
They just leave it all to chance

Yet I long for a friend to share their love with me
Only love can set you free, only love, only love, only love,
Only love can set you free
Track Name: The Migrant
They call my kind a swarm
A pestilence of human flesh, a cockroach to be crushed
Why won’t they see me as I am? I am a man
With a troubled past, who lost his friends along the way.
When I’ve seen so many lost
Do you think that I don’t know the value of life?
Do you think that I don’t know?

We came from the same skin
We made our boats and were cast towards the wind
How can we really belong when we are the children of the dawn?
And we will all end in heaven or hell
All to hell or heaven

You draw your boarders
With bribes and lies and ill-advised hypocracy
So you call me a stranger for I am not your neighbour
When Jesus Christ himself was a refugee
Yet you are not moved to mercy for me
You are not moved to mercy

When you find my body on the shoreline
Then I’ll no longer be the man I was
Who killed this one? No-one will say
Better that he die this way rather than live next to me
For we have the right to the comforts of life
And he has no right to disturb us

Goodbye children, goodbye home
Goodbye to the land I called my own
And goodbye to the one I might have known. Ohh
Track Name: Summer Breeze
And it comes to me now in the summer breeze
Takes the heaviness off my chest
And it makes me glad of the air I breath, of the things I believe
Reminds me what we’re doing here
And all my dreams are clearer
And all my fantasies are nearer to me

And all my troubles wash away in the coming tide
And all the things that haunted me are swept aside
Be still my drunken dreams and my foolish pride

And it comes to me now with the rising sun
Puts a light inside my heart
And it makes me glad of the ones I love
Reminds me what we’re doing here
And all my dreams are nearer
And all my memories are dearer to me

And all my troubles wash away in the coming tide
And all the things that haunted me are swept aside
Be still my drunken dreams and my foolish pride
Track Name: Solstice
I was chasing the horizon for to find the rising sun
I could never have imagined what would come, come
If I fall into the distance I surrender being found
But I might instead discover the world, world

Sweet summer, sweet summer love help me
Sweet summer, sweet summer love save me
Oh my summer love raise me
Summer love raise me, my summer love raise me my summer love

I had very often wondered what would happen at the start
I had only to open up my heart, heart

Sweet summer, sweet summer love help me
Sweet summer, sweet summer love save me
Oh my summer love raise me
Summer love raise me, my summer love raise me my summer love
Track Name: Remember Me
When you’re feeling low remember me
When you’re feeling mood indigo remember me
Take me to your heart, let me fill your lungs, let me light your smile, remember me

Years have hidden me, remember me
But not my legacy, remember me
I see through your eyes, I watch over you, I listen to your sighs, remember me

Touch was tangible, remember me
But you still feel my pull, remember me
I will comfort you, in ways more than words, with wings of steel and gold, remember me
