about
‘Windrush’ has become Jelly Cleaver's anthem for migrant justice. The speech extract at the beginning comes from a protest she attended several years ago at Windrush Square outside the Black Cultural Archives, protesting the Windrush Scandal. One of the speakers started singing ‘We Shall Overcome’, the anthem of the Civil Rights Movement against Jim Crow segregation in America. Jelly was struck by the symbolism of the continuance of racism over half a century later which clearly manifests in the UK’s immigration policy. Having filmed the moment on her camera, she went home and produced the bare bones of the track that evening.
She has since performed the song countless times at protests and fundraisers for anti-racism and migrant justice, continually standing against the government’s increasingly cruel migration policy. With the passing of the inhumane Illegal Migration Bill, Jelly decided now’s the time to release ‘Windrush’ in order to raise funds for SOAS Detainee Support, one of the leading groups supporting migrants and fighting for their rights.
lyrics
When the wind rushes through the trees
Hey now hey now
Oh is she sighing
Or is she bringing a change
When the tide breaks upon the seas
Hey now hey now
Will your boat find shelter
Or be blown away
Oh when my mother calls to me
Hey now hey now
Is she nurse or empress
To her children of slaves
When the wind rushes through the trees
Hey now hey now
Oh is she sighing
Or is she bringing a change
We are going to rise, we're going to rise
We are going to rise, we're going to rise
We are going to rise, we're going to rise
And we shall overcome
